HardRock DJ
mrsmule has a collegue 'Has' who is a DJ at the HardRock cafe in Amsterdam. On Thursday night I took up my laptop full of MP3s and Has showed me ropes, I helped him get set up ans he told me the secrets of playing at the hardrock.
played lots of soul n funk/rare groove/managed to sneak in some chemical bros and beastie boys. BlackEyed Peas/50 cent blah blah.. pretty mainstream stuff.... it's gotta be recogniseable and its gotta have lyrics (no long intros)
Has is away on holiday for the 30th June and 7th July and is prepared to let the mrmule loose in the hardrock, covering for him....woOt!!!!

A Tribute to Tresor
The legendary Tresor Club opened its doors in Berlin's Leipziger Strasse in March 1991, and troughout the years has gone on to make a reputation for itself as one of the world's leading techno clubs. Rumours of the closure of Berlin's famous Tresor Club have been circulating in the techno clubbing community on and off for the past few years.
Tresor has been closed down many times since 1991. The last closure was on 31 August 2003 when the Berliner Police Department did a large Razzia at Tresor. Over 400 customers were controlled and 16 party people were taken to the Police headquarters for drugs possession, as well as one more who was already wanted. The club was immediately closed and remained closed until the Monday 8 September But once again...Tresor continued strong after this short period of closure.
We all knew the end was coming on day or another and a few weeks ago the official news that Tresor held their last parties during April was announced. There is no word yet on a new location for Tresor, but we can't let this moment pass without doing something back for the club, the sound, the label and all the people who understand to true Tresor feeling.
So, this weekend livesets.com will do a tribute to Tresor, starting Friday at 12:00 CET (GMT+1) and we will continue all weekend till Tresor closed its doors on Sunday. This broadcast will last for over 40 hours.

Tune in this weekend with Winamp or Windows Media Player
mrmule will be producing a Tresor mix in memory of a great era.. stay tuned to music.mrmule.com

MP3 Downloads
I have updated the MP3 download section of the website.

The site is powered by Netjuke, an open source script available from Sourceforge.
The Artekopia Netjuke is a Web-Based Audio Streaming Jukebox powered
by PHP 4, an increasing choice of databases and all the MP3, Ogg Vorbis,
Windows media Audio and other format files that constitute your digital
music collection. The Netjuke aims at enabling families and small
organizations or communities to run a private "mp3.com-like" Web site to
access the music they legitimately own, distribute or are granted access to.
Supports language packs (English, French, Catalan, German, Spanish),
multi-level security, shared and private playlists, random playlists,
images, etc.
See the feature list below and the rest of the documentation for more
information. See the Online Demo to give it a try before downloading
at http://netjuke.sourceforge.net/demo/ (no music or admin access).
For the latest version of this software, see:
- Preferred Site: http://netjuke.sourceforge.net/
- Official Site: http://netjuke.artekopia.org/
- Alternate Site: http://netjuke.tekartists.com/
Product Features:
- Cross-platform server: Linux, BSD, Mac OS X, Windows & more
- Cross-platform and lightweight interface: MSIE, Mozilla, Netscape,
Konqueror, Galeon, etc.
- Features an easy to use browser-based install/upgrade tool to get
you started in minutes.
- Escapes the filesystem metaphor for music categorization (ie:
browsing through files and directories).
- Multi-database backend: MySQL, PostgreSQL (Oracle, MSSQL, Access &
more to come soon). This feature is made possible by the Open Source
PHP library ADODB.
Web Site: http://php.weblogs.com/ADODB/
- Recursively scans named directories for audio files (mp3, ogg & wma),
and imports them to the database in a snap. This feature is made possible
by the Open Source PHP library getid3.php.
Web Site: http://getid3.sourceforge.net/.
- Optimized for local MP3, OGG and WMA audio content, but also supports
internet radio streams, other audio formats, and/or remote content by
adding them manually.
- Quick search and advanced search options.
- Random Music Selector with filters to generate playlists.
- Music is indexed and cross-linked by artists, albums and genres.
- Features alphabetical artist and album listings, latest additions,
search filters, most popular tracks, etc.
- User-editable private and or shared audio streaming playlists.
- Multiple built-in user access levels: Admin, Editors & Users.
- Security modes: public and/or private content, activate/disable
public registration, etc.
- Optional Community section can be dynamically enabled or disabled
from the admin section.
- Language pack support: English, French, Catalan, German, Spanish (...)
- Streaming can be achieved through multiple protocols, with
appropriate audio player (http, https, rtsp, etc.).
- Supports streaming from any local or mounted directory (smb, nfs,
etc.). Now also support a limited "Radio" option as of 1.0b9.
- URL of the streamed audio files can optionally be obfuscated for
further protection against illegitimate or unwanted file downloads.
- Administrators can choose to limit music playback to the RealPlayer,
which doesn't display any file URL, therefore protecting your media
files even more.
- Administrators can optionally choose to allow for file download in
addition to streaming. Public file trading IS NOT the intent of the
author(s). Please be responsible, and get your music legally.
- Interface can be customized, and/or branded, using built-in color and
font management tools, optional static or dynamic HTML header and
footer (local or remote), etc.
- Administrator can choose to optionally let users customize their own
color and font theme.
- The application, database and music streaming servers can reside on a
single host, or separately.
- And much, much more!

Jan 2005 MIXCrikey, at long last. Well after moving house and at least getting my decks set up, I have managed to produce a superdooper 2 hour extravaganza!.
The inspiration has come from listening to the Radio One Peel Session on 15.09.04 featuring Jeff Mills. Its a great mix with some classic tunes, you can really hear the roots of his musical career, try find it on BitTorrent if you can.
Anywho.. back to this months feast of tunes and super tracklisting. I have also made an OGG VORBIS version ..if it's of any use to anyone.
I called this months 'Influences' as it the music chosen really has had an influence on me, granted, some of these tunes are remixes.. sometimes it's really difficult to find those treasured tracks. 2 of the tracks are from mrs mules collection from her breakdancing years, so lots of Mills, Sims, Advent and a few suprises along the way.

mrmule <LIVE> UPDATE
Saturday afternnon was a great success!
After picking up the sound system with Stephan, I got all the wires sorted out and the decks setup, opened the windows and started playing to the street. There was generally a good reaction (what with it being a super hot sunny day), people were dancing on their bikes and smiling as they walked past.
I DJd for about 4 hours solid, starting with chunky techno music and the last hour or so was tres chilled out and summery.
Unfortunately there was no-one to join me to record the set... ay well!
The gig with Babara & Jurr from the Supperclub was SUPERB!!!! All three of us played one record on for over 2 hours.... and I got it recorded!!!!! (I'll upload it today/tonight for y'all)
When we were packing all the stuff away Sunday, the guy who owns the coffeeshop downstairs asked me if I would play some gigs for him in one of his establishments... YAY... shameless self promotion always works eh!?

fingathing Utrecht
Went to see Fingathing play live in Utrecht.
Two guys from Manchester (UK), one playing double bass (electric) and the other with a deck and drum machine.
We were treated to a "4th dimensional" rendition of their last album, with tracks, Head to head, Grand Central and a complete mashup of 'slop'.
Doublebass player Sneaky (Simon Houghton) played an entrancing version of 'You fly me'.. but he did mention the weed a few times, so i guess a good time was had by the band. Scratch DJ Peter Parker (Dan Baxter) slammed out some great scratches, cutting it up without mercy, with close up cameras on the decks, displaying the action overhead.
Backing up the music was VJ Chris Drury, with his characterful 'gorillaz-esque' art work of the band and their misfit friends.
It really was a gig quite out of this world, quite experimental, but warm and friendly.

Mew album out now on 'Grand Central'

Shopping for records
I love shopping for records... wether it's online or in the shop.... Specially in the shop.
There are 3 record shops in Utrecht, but I'll only mention 2.
The guys at Metro Recordstore :
Oude Gracht 72 - 3511 AT - Utrecht - Tel - +31 - 30 - 2232298
Who hate music, but give you free coffee and cake (you don't know that though)
Their collection of New Releases is astonishingly good, with all the best names. A huge 2nd hand collection, most of which I havn't been near yet. They also have a nice sun terrace with chairs down by the canal, tres nice for escaping the busy Oudegracht stretch.
The other is closer to the Dom Tower Rhythm Import Recordshop :
Mariaplaats 5 - 3511LH - Utrecht - Tel - +31 - 30 - 2315583
Nice lad, with decent collection of new tunes.. more house than tech house, but worth popping in to see if there's anything different.
Then there's the web.

Updated MP3s
So I decided to play around with some flash code I've had for a while and offer you all a lurvley streaming MP3 player for each of my downloads. It's like a no commitment sneaky peaky but you need flash player6. I will if I can do a track listing for thm all at some point.. but I know it's gonna be birtually impossible.
If the javascript link doesn't work for you on the main page then try these plain html links.. you don't get the fancy pop-up (all nicely sized) but hit that play button and I'm damn sure it'll work for ya just the same!

RIAA clamp down on the DJ
DJ mix CDs, sold in almost every independent record store are on the whole unlicensed and technically illegal to distribute. However, DJs and producers alike often rely upon these illegal mixes in order to gain credibility, and to promote themselves to the general public.
The dance scene relies upon these ‘illegal’ ways to survive, and it seems that the only people who actually care about this particular copyright infringement are not the artists themselves but the record companies – who are only involved in the dance scene for profit.
This latest attack by the RIAA is therefore hypocritical – they claim that their pursuit of copyright infringement is primarily in the interest of the artist, yet most dance producers actually approve of and rely upon this illegal distribution.

Artist: Supersonsiousness Series

great lyrics
Listening to this song last night.. I do love the lyrics, dunno if it's just me... but do you feel a revolution coming?..anyway.. here's an except >>>
I feel the weight of the world on my shoulder
As I'm gettin' older, y'all, people gets colder
Most of us only care about money makin'
Selfishness got us followin' our wrong direction
Wrong information always shown by the media
Negative images is the main criteria
Infecting the young minds faster than bacteria
Kids wanna act like what they see in the cinema
Yo', whatever happened to the values of humanity
Whatever happened to the fairness in equality
Instead in spreading love we spreading animosity
Lack of understanding, leading lives away from unity
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' under
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' down
There's no wonder why sometimes I'm feelin' under
Gotta keep my faith alive till love is found
People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek?

Elektro tribute to Iron Maiden
Record label in Amsterdam has assembled 14 electro-fied covers of classic tracks by the British metal band. Vocoders, drum machines, and analog synths galore, plus influences as diverse as industrial, synthpop, and Miami bass. Loving tribute? Unholy abomination? Entertaining genre cross-pollination? You decide -- the entire album is available as streaming audio from this Dutch radio station.

Friends remember Jam Master Jay

Simply. He was bad. But, as his two companions said, not bad meaning bad, but bad meaning good.
He's also gone.
Not in gone away, but dead gone.
A death is a death; a murder is a murder.
Better yet, an execution is an execution.
